April 14, 2009

Look for news concerning the 2009 Williamsburg Nazarene Church Softball League soon.  A coaches meeting is scheduled for April 30, 2009.

I have appreciated the opportunity to be part of this league for many years, and to help run it for the last 4 or 5 years.  I have made many wonderful friends through the years, and appreciate all of you who have kept me in your prayers.  Having said that, however, it's time for me to step aside and let members of the Williamsburg Church of the Nazarene run the league.  I may come watch some softball this season, and may help out from time to time if needed.

In Christ,

Chris

August 15, 2008

It looks like it's going to be a beautiful day for playing softball tomorrow.  Please be ready to play 15 minutes before your scheduled game time.  The coin toss will be held prior to game time; the higher seeded team will call, and the winner of the coin toss will choose home or visitor.

I want to clarify the situation on who is eligible to play during the tourney.  There is no official written rule that says you have to play during the regular season to be eligible to play in the tourney (see the League Rules tab).  However, we discourage teams bringing in "ringers".  This year we ended up using a reduced regular season schedule (8 games instead of 10) due to canceling games 2 weeks due to the weather.  Several teams had people lined up to play June 7 and/or July 12 that were unable to play those days due to rainouts and unable to play other weeks due to byes or work schedules.  If those players have played in our league in the last 3 years, then it is acceptable for them to play in the tourney.  I know at least 4 of the remaining 6 teams have asked me if someone could play in the 2008 tourney that had not played in a regular season game in 2008; I have approved those requests.

Good luck tomorrow to New Life Holiness, Bethesda, Williamsburg, Hagerstown, Sylvan Nook, and Centerville Christian.

August 10, 2008

It was a beautiful day for playing softball on August 9, the first week of the end-of-season tourney.  With high temperatures in the 70s, low humidity, and a gentle breeze, we couldn't ask for better playing conditions.  And there were several excellent softball games and plays.  Many spectators came to watch several of the games; that was great to see.   Being at the ball diamond from 7:30 am until 8:00 pm made for a long day, but it was an enjoyable day as well, spent with good Christian friends.

Thank you Hagerstown for providing concession sales on August 9.

Hopefully the second week of the tourney will be as good as the first week, and we'll have good turnout for the end of season awards pitch-in.

August 8, 2008

It looks like a great day for softball tomorrow.  Be ready to play 10 minutes before game time.  The hour time limit per game will be enforced.

Depending on the results of the first round games, the possibility exists that either the 4 pm or 5 pm game will be a forfeit.  If that is the case, the last 2 or 3 games will be moved up one hour.  I will contact coaches who might see their game times changed.

August 5, 2008

I have posted the 2008 team photos that I took on July 26 on the Photos page. Select the 2008 Photos button on the left hand side of the page to see this year's pictures.

Also, the current weather forecast for Saturday August 9 looks promising.  Sunny with highs in the upper 70s is great for playing softball in August.

Please be at the diamond, with your team lineup set and your team ready to play 10 minutes before your scheduled game time.  The first game starts promptly at 8 am, and each following game will start promptly on the hour.  Warm up and stretch before your game.  The coin toss and pre-game will take place before teams take the field.  Again, we're using a 10 run rule after 4 or more innings with a one-hour time limit.  It's possible that some games could end after 2 or 3 innings if the time limit is reached.

On August 9, all teams need to be ready to play 15 minutes before game time in order to submit lineups and perform the coin toss to determine the home team.  The top seed in each game will call the coin toss.  All games on August 9 will use a 10 run rule or a one hour time limit which will only be extended in case the teams are tied.  I will also try to take additional team photos on August 9 but will be out of town on August 16.

There are no games on Saturday August 2.  There are no practices at the Williamsburg Nazarene Church diamond Friday August 1 or Saturday August 2 (Community Days and wedding rehearsal/wedding).  Let's hope there is no rain on August 9.

We will schedule and announce the end-of-season awards pitch-in.

July 26, 2008
9 games were played on Saturday July 26.  It was nice to have a second Saturday in a row without rain or having to use the Shop Vac or Diamond Dry.  Congratulations to New Life Holiness for finishing the regular season 8-0 and earning the top seed in the tourney.  The results are posted on the results page.

7 batters hit a total of 11 home runs during the 9 games.

I took team photos of  all teams that were present.  I will print them out and make 1 copy available per team August 9, the first week of the tourney (weather permitting).  I will post them on the website in the next few days.

It is going to take me a while to determine all seeds for the tourney; due to the rain, teams did not play every other team once.  In the event of a tie, head-to-head results will be the first tie-breaker.  If teams did not play, I am going to use record against common opponents as the second tie-breaker.  If a 3rd tie-breaker is needed, I will use strength-of-schedule -- the combined records of opponents they defeated.  If a 4th tie-breaker is needed, I will use the average run differential (Average Scored - Average Allowed).

I will have more information about the tourney schedule posted Sunday evening or Monday evening.

July 25, 2008

FYI... there are 9 games scheduled for Saturday July 26, 2008. The first game is Williamsburg vs Richmond First at 9 am, and the 9th is Bethesda vs New Life Holiness at 7 pm. The entire schedule is posted on the www.wnchurchsoftball.com website on the Schedule tab.

I do plan on taking team photos tomorrow. Please be ready to go 10 minutes before game time so I may take the team photos before the game.

Also, no one has signed up for selling concessions, so please be sure that you and your team bring things to drink and perhaps eat.  It is going to be warm and humid.

In the event of rain, we will go on a rain-delay schedule and play ball as soon as possible. The weather forecasts that I have seen are calling for intermittent scattered showers -- no all day rains -- but we'll see what tomorrow brings.

A reminder -- we will use a 10 run rule after 4 or more innings with a 75 minute time limit as well. In the event of rain delay, we may change the time limit to be one hour.

I will have a rough draft of the tourney schedule (without teams) available tomorrow at the diamond, and will post the schedule late Saturday night, at the completion of the regular season, if at all possible.  The tourney will start at 8 am Saturday August 9.

July 22, 2008

It looks like all churches will be able to play as scheduled this coming Saturday, July 26.  Games will be played at the times listed on the Schedule page and under the July 12 entry listed below.  July 26 will conclude the regular season.  Concession sales are still available for July 26 as well as August 16.

July 19, 2008

All 9 games scheduled for July 19 were completed.  For the first time all season, it didn't rain or we didn't have to clean water off the diamond.  It was hot and humid, but at least we had a moderate breeze most of the day.  New Life Holiness won 2 games to remain the only undefeated team at 6-0.  Bethesda won 3 games to move into 2nd at 6-1.  Hagerstown came from behind to defeat Centerville Christian 12-11 in 8 innings.  Williamsburg won 2 games to move into 3rd place at 4-2.  United defeated Galilean Baptist 16 to 15.

Three of the games were decided by one run, and one more was decided by two runs.  The other 5 games were run rule decisions.

Justin Stiner from Bethesda made one of the best catches I have ever seen as he leaped to rob a batter of a home run, tumbled over the fence and then held onto the ball as he landed.  There were also many other outstanding defensive plays and many times where runners hustled to take extra bases.  5 batters each hit one home run; the ball didn't seem to be carrying as well as I thought that it might have. Great sportsmanship and Christian fellowship were shown the entire day.

All games were played using a run-rule of 10 runs after 4 or more innings and a 75 minute time limit.  Next week's games will be played using the same run rule and time limit as we conclude the regular season.  The end of season double elimination tourney will be played August 9 and 16 using a 10 run rule and a one hour time limit per game.  We'll tentatively play 11 or 12 games August 9 and finish with 9 or 10 games August 16.  The schedule for all remaining weeks is tentative and subject to change due to the weather.

There is a possibility one of the churches will be unable to play next week.  If I find out they are not able to play, I will move up games scheduled later in the day.  I will post changes to the schedule if they are made as soon as I know as well as send out e-mail.  If I don't post changes, games will be played as currently scheduled, and each team will play 8 regular season games.

Thanks to all who supported the concession sales; it was a long and hot day and important that drinks were available for sale to allow us to stay hydrated.  Concession sales also go for a good cause.  Concession sales are still available on July 26 and August 16; I hope we have churches sign up.  Hagerstown will be selling concessions on August 9.

I am planning on bringing my camera and taking team photos next week.  I will print out a copy for each team and post them to the website.  Please try to be ready for team photos 10 minutes before game time.  Thank you.

If we lose any more games due to the weather these last 2 weeks of the regular season, I don't know how we may be able to reschedule.

July 12, 2008

All games scheduled for today are canceled due to the weather.  A completely revised schedule with 9 games each for July 19 and 26 will be posted later this afternoon.   I will try to schedule so each team plays 8 regular scheduled games.  Games may start as soon as 8:30 am, and may start as late as 5:45 and 7 pm.  We will also change the run rule to be 10 runs after 4 or more innings the last 2 weeks.
